For a second straight season and our 6th championship appearance, The North Jersey Warriors won their 5th championship with a new lineup and 4 returning veterans. The Warriors defeated the North Caldwell Lady Knights 17 -4. Though the game started with The Lady Knights eager and ready to compete, jumping out to an early lead of 0-4. The Warriors didn’t quit despite the rain challenges, taking the lead by the end of the second inning 7-4 before the game was delayed due to weather. Returning to the plate almost a week later; The Warriors scored 6 runs in the third and 4 more in the fourth before the game was stopped by the umpires. Gianna was spectacular all season, dominating the mound and all her at-bats. With peace of mind (I’m sure) the defense had her back.
There were many highlights throughout the 2-part championship series and season, both on defense and offense. A three-run homerun by Nat gave the Warriors just the right push to swing the momentum in the bottom of the second, a triple by Brooke in the bottom of the third, and outstanding plays in the field. Referenced by the league commissioner. Which included a relay after a well-hit ball to center field. Recovered by Reese, thrown in, and received by Nora who made the throw to El for the out at the plate. A testament to the athletes and coaching staff who emphasized these types of relays during practices. The girls went 13-0 this season and grew tremendously as a team. Lia had a massive year in the batter’s box and had some amazing stretches while covering first. Newcomer Sophia added the extra offense and defense the team needed at just the right times. Having several doubles, a home run, and 13 RBIs. Vin played a dominant 2nd base this season gobbling up balls and completing the plays as needed. The youngest on the team, Aria made her mark, a sparky teammate who kept us on our toes. At only 10 she has a keen eye for tracking down the ball in the outfield. She has quite a softball career ahead of her. Deanna grew throughout this season and should be proud of herself, always the happiest on the team and had several good at-bats through the season, in clutch opportunities. She made the best of this season and was truly committed to being better than yesterday.
I am proud of what these athletes accomplished this season. I look forward to our training and seasons to come. They are a special group of talented players, who are just at the edge of their capabilities.
